The Hitchhiker
（ヒッチハイカー）

I was driving up to London in my new car when I saw the hitchhiker by the side of the road.
道路の脇でヒッチハイカーを見た時、私は新車でロンドンに向かっていた。

I touched the brake and brought the car to a stop beside him.
ブレーキをかけて、彼の側で車を止めた。

I always stopped for hitchhikers.
ヒッチハイカーにはいつも止めた。

I knew just how it used to feel to be standing on the side of a country road watching the cars go by.
車が通り過ぎるのを見つめながら、田舎の道路の脇で立っているのがどんな感じなのかをよく知っていたからだ。

I hated the drivers for pretending they didn’t see me, especially the ones in big cars with three empty seats.
見えない振りをするドライバーが嫌いだった, 3つの空席がある大きな車のドライバーたちは、特に嫌いでした。

The hitchhiker looked through the open window and said “Going to London, guv’nor?”
ヒッチハイカーはあいている窓から、「すみません、ロンドンに行きますか？」と言った。

“Yes,” I said. “Jump in.”
「ええ、乗りなさい。」と私。　

He got in and I drove on.
彼が車に乗り込むと、私は車を出した。

He was a small man with gray teeth.
彼は灰色の歯をした小さな男だった。

His eyes were dark and quick and clever, like rat’s eyes, and his ears slightly pointed at the top.
その目は、野ネズミの目のようで黒く、すばしこく、利口そうだった、耳は上端がすこしとがっていた。

He had a cloth cap on his head and he was wearing a gray jacket with enormous pockets.
布の縁なし帽子をかぶって、すごく大きなポケットのある上着を着ていた。

The gray jacket, together with the quick eyes and the pointed ears, made him look more than anything like some sort of a huge human rat.
灰色の上着と、すばしこい目と、とがり耳のせいで、彼は全く巨大な人間ネズミそっくりに見えた。

“What part of London are you headed for?” I asked him.
「ロンドンのどこに向かっているんですか?」と、私は聞いた。

“I’m going right through London and out the other side,” he said.
「ロンドンをまっすぐ通り抜けて、向こう側まで行くんです。

“I’m going to Epsom, for the races. It’s Derby Day today.”
レースなんでエプソンに行くんですよ。今日はダービーの日なんですよ。」と、彼。

“So it is,” I said. “I wish I were going with you. I love betting on horses.”
「その通りですね。一緒に行ければなあ。競馬が好きなんですよ。」と、私。

“I never bet on horses,” he said. “I don’t even watch them run. That’s a stupid business.”
「賭けなどはしないですよ。馬が走るのさせ見ませんよ。あれはばかげた商売ですよ。」と、彼。

“Then why do you do?” I asked.
「じゃ、なぜ行くんですか？」と、私。

He didn’t seem to like that question.
彼はその質問を好まないように見えた。

“I’m sorry,” I said. “It’s none of my business what you do. The trouble is, I’m a writer, and most writers are terribly nosy.”
「ごめん、私の知ったことではないね。私は作家なんですよ、たいていの作家は詮索好きなんですよ。」

At that moment, I heard the police siren.
その時、警察のサイレンが聞こえた。

Talking with the hitchhiker, I had forgot to watch the car’s speed; I was way over the speed limit.
ヒッチハイカーと話していて、車のスピードに注意していなかった ; 制限速度をはるかにオーバーしていた。

The cop passed us and pulled to the side of the road. I pulled in behind him.
白バイが通り過ぎて、車を道路の脇に寄せた。私はその後ろに停車した。

The cop got off his motorcycle.
警官は、オートバイを降りた。

“This is real trouble,” I said. “I don’t like it one little bit.”
「こいつはまずいぞ!　いやな感じだ!」と、私。

The cop came walking slowly toward us. He was a big man with a belly, and his blue trousers were tight around his enormous thighs.
警官はこちらの方に向かってゆっくりと歩いてきた。それは、腹の突き出た大きな男だった。彼の青いズボンは太い太腿ではちきれそうだった。

“What’s the hurry?” he said.
「何を急いでいるんだ？」と、彼。

“No hurry, officer,” I answered.
「全然急いでないですよ。」と、私は答えた。

“Do you now what the speed limit is in this country?” he said.
「この国の制限速度を知っているのか？」

“Seventy,” I said.
「70マイルです。」

“And do you mind telling me exactly what speed you were doing just now?”
「さっきどんなスピードで走っていたか言ってくれるか？」

I didn’t say anything.
私は黙ってしまった。

When he spoke next, he rased his voice so loud that I jumped.
彼が次に話した時、その声があまりに大きかったので、私は跳び上がった。

“One hundred and twenty miles per hour!” he said. “That’s fifty miles an hour over the limit!”
「120マイルだよ!　制限速度を50マイルも超えているんだよ!」と、彼は言った。

“And who are you?” he asked.
「それで、お前は誰だ?」と彼はまた言った。

“He’s a hitchhiker,” I said. “I’m giving him a ride.”
「彼はヒッチハイカーです。彼を乗せてやってるんですよ。」と、私。

“I didn’t ask you,” he said. “I asked him.”
「お前には聞いていない。彼に聞いているんだ。」と、警官。

“Have I done something wrong?” my passenger asked.
「私は何か悪いことしたんですか？」とヒッチハイカーは聞き返した。

“That’s more than likely,” the cop answered. “Anyway, you’re a witness. I’ll deal with you in a minute. Driver’s license,” he said, holding out his hand.
「それは間違いないだろうよ。どちらにしても、お前は証人だ。お前は後で処理するよ。免許証!」と手を伸ばしながら、警官が言った。
